PK Comments

We found C. longistaminea growing alongside C. grandiflora, C. laui and, (what we called at the time) C. esmeraldana in the Guanillos Valley and around Esmeralda. At the mouth of the Valley, it is the Copiapoa that grows closest to the Ocean shore. Further inland, near 'Secret Valley', it grows alongside C. cinerea subsp. columna-alba.

There is a track that runs from Esmeralda to Cifuncho. From it, there are a number of valleys that run west of the track towards the Pacific Ocean (Quebrada Guanillos, Quebrada Tigrillo, Quebrada La Madera, Quebrada de Leoncites etc) where the dominant Copiapoa between the track and the Ocean is C. grandiflora in the south, and C. cinerea subsp. columna-alba further north, but where at the coast it is replaced by forms of C. longistaminea (giving rise to KK's C. tigrillensis n.n.).

In 'Copiapoa in their Environment' Schulz & Kapitany report a plant that they call Copiapoa sp. 'Cifuncho' that grows at the coast to the south of Cifuncho. We take this to be the most northern occurrence of C. longistaminea.

In some of these smaller side valleys, we found plants that looked more like forms of C. taltalensis (C. rupestris) than C. longistaminea This coastal strip has been earmarked for more detailed investigations on a future trip.
