Backeberg stated that seedlings are similar to his Copiapoa gigantea, being an olive green colour but with more horn-yellow radial and central spines and with more or less the same number of ribs. Taylor (1981) suggests this should be under C. cinerea v. haseltoniana.'

PK Comments

During our Copiapoathons, we would see these plants along the road that climbs east from Paposo into the coastal hills, eventually joining up with Ruta 5, the Panamerican Highway, south of Antofagasta. These plants were covered in heavy dust thrown up by the passing transport. C. eremophila and C. tenebrosa from Taltal were named by Ritter as high altitude plants related to C. cinerea. The differences between these taxa are minimal.
