Description

F. Ritter, (1960), Cactus (Paris). 15(66):19

Only referred to as a new species in Ritter's description of C. hypogaea:

Ritter makes the new combination: Copiapoa hypogaea var. barquitensis

29a. VAR. BARQUITENSIS RITTER var. nov.

A var. hypogaea recedit costis 11  -    16, ca 4 mm altis, arugosis; areolis 0,7  -    2 mm diam., 3  -    7 mm inter se remotis; spinis marginalibus 0  -    10, centrali 0  -    1, usque ad 15 mm longi; petalis 12 mm longis, 4  -    5 mm latis; habitat Barquito, Depart. Chañaral.

Unterschiede gegen VAR.

Abb. 1021/1022

We have flowered C. hypogea, C. barquitensis and C. coquimbana and all three definitely had a distinct sweetish scent.

  • 12 (24):125: A visit to Chile by Roger M Ferryman

We left this area and made camp on the beach at Barquito. The following morning we climbed the steep coastal cliffs, passing the odd Copiapoa growing amongst the massive lumps of rock. On the way up I found Eriosyce megacarpa (RMF 66) in full flower and collected a couple of specimens that would otherwise be destroyed by the extending construction work here. On the very top of the 300 m high cliffs we found Eriosyce atacamensis and Copiapoa humilis var. barquitensis,(RMF 96), but there was no sign of the Pyrrhocactus that we had hoped to find here.
