Description
F. Ritter, (1960), Cactus (Paris). 15(66):19
Only
referred to as a new species in Ritter's description of C. hypogaea:
"Cette
espèce est très proche de C. barquitensis sp. nov. (description non
publiée), dont l‘habitat se situe plus au Sud. Cette dernière diffère de C.
hypogaea par ses aréoles plus laineuses, plus blanches, moins enfoncées dans
les tubercules, ces derniers plus arrondis, non ridés."

Ritter makes the new combination: Copiapoa
hypogaea var. barquitensis
29a. VAR.
BARQUITENSIS RITTER var. nov.
A
var. hypogaea recedit costis 11 - 16, ca 4 mm altis, arugosis; areolis
0,7 - 2 mm diam., 3 - 7 mm inter se remotis; spinis marginalibus 0
- 10,
centrali 0 - 1, usque ad 15 mm longi; petalis 12 mm longis, 4
- 5 mm latis;
habitat Barquito, Depart. Chañaral.
Unterschiede gegen VAR. HYPOGAEA: Rippen 11
- 16, ca 4 mm hoch, meist stark aufgelöst; Höcker im ganzen
gerundeter, stumpfer und etwas kleiner; Rippen - Trennfurchen stärker geschlängelt;
5 mm, dazu öfters 1 abstehender, bis 15 mm langer Mittelstacheln;
Stachellosigkeit ist weniger häufig als bei VAR. HYPOGAEA. Petalen 12 mm
lang und 4 - 5 mm breit (bei 2 Exemplaren), also schmaler als bei VAR.
HYPOGAEA, sehr ausgebreitet, so daß sie im Hochstand dem Scheitel
aufliegen.
Samen mit etwas größerem und weniger
ventralem Hilum.
Typusort BARQUITO bei Chañaral, nur
stellenweise. Von mir entdeckt 1956. Nr. FR 654, in der Original - Veröffentlichung
der COPIAPOA HYPOGAEA aufgeführt als COPIAPOA BARQUITENSIS RITTER nom.

A visit to
Chile by Roger M Ferryman
We left
this area and made camp on the beach at Barquito. The
following
morning
we climbed the steep coastal
cliffs,
passing the odd Copiapoa
growing amongst the massive lumps of rock. On the way up I found
Eriosyce megacarpa (RMF 66) in full flower and collected a couple of
specimens that would otherwise be destroyed by the extending construction
work here. On the very top of the 300 m high cliffs we found Eriosyce
atacamensis and Copiapoa humilis var. barquitensis,(RMF
96), but there
was no sign of the Pyrrhocactus that we had hoped to
find
here.
