Copiapoa alticostata Ritter, sp. nova, a C. cuprea Ritter (Cactus 1959: 136) recedit:

corporibus 20-40 cm altis, viridibus, caespites magnos 1 m diam. formantibus; costis altis, areolis maioribus, 8-13 mm diam.; spinis brunneis, centralibus iam ab initio praesentibus, dein 1-3(-4); tubo florali dimidio minore, 7-9 mm longo; fructu viridi; seminibus minoribus, 1,4-1,5 mm longis, 1 mm latis,

Habitat:  Nördlich von Nicolasa, Dept. Freirina, Nord-Chile. Gesammelt als: FR 717.

Now provisionally accepted pending further study. The evidence of Ritter‘s description and plants such as RMF 275 (Charles 1998: fig. 48) suggest that this could be part of a hybrid swarm (C. coquimbana x C. echinoides).
