Eriosyce sensu Kattermann 1994

Kattermann considers 23 different genera as synonyms under his concept of Eriosyce. Some of these had never really become established in the hobby, while others, such as Horridocactus, Islaya, Neoporteria, Pyrrhocactus and Thelocephala had become widely accepted. John Donald and Gordon Rowley proposed a much wider concept for the genus Neoporteria (Reunion of the genus Neoporteria. In Cact. Succ. J. Gr. Brit.,1966) but left out the taxa that remained in the genus Eriosyce.

The 1994 Kattermann classification includes the Eriosyce s.s. taxa, and as the name precedes that of Britton & Rose's Neoporteria hobbyists had to swallow yet another set of name changes. However, a closer look reveals that some of the popular names in cactus collections can still be found, but at the rank of Section or Subsection. One exception is Thelocephala Ito (1957), with its taxa found in two of these subsections:
