C. krainzeana Ritt. (Taxon 1963) Plant no.19, map 4.

Body-grey-green, 6-12 cm across forming clumps to 1 m across. 13-24 ribs, 15 mm high with raised tubercles. Crown with grey wool; Areoles-grey, 3-6 mm across and 7 mm apart; Spines--10-12 radials, open, thin 1-2 cm long, soft, mostly curved, white or grey. 14-20 centrals, 2-3 cm long; Flower-3-3.5 cm long, saffron yellow with stamens all inserted in the floral tube, 7-9 stigma lobes, gold. Tube funnel-shaped and ovary with few scales; Fruit-white or rose, splitting from the top, with rich green seeds, 1.6 x 1.3 mm, with brown hilum; Habitat-coastal hill, Dept. Taltal.

Note: Taylor (1981) suggests that this may be C. cinerea v. albispina.  

 

C. krainzeana v. scopulina Ritt. (Taxon 1963)

Varies from the species in being larger, to 20 cm across, and with stiff erect brown or black acicular radial spines. Central spines subulate.

Note: no longer considered to. be a valid variety. See C. krainzeana.
