Copiapoa hypogaea

When Rudolf removed a large rock, this 'population' of Copiapoa was revealed. There were no plants for kilometres around as this area lies behind the high coastal mountains that prevent rain or fog from drifting in from the Pacific Ocean. How can these plants survive? Rudolf goes to water them 'regularly' i.e. approximately once per year!  Amazing how variable these plants are, asuming that they are representatives of just one species.
